“What are they doing behind the Northgate Target store? You know, that space that used to be a Metro park & ride?” People are still asking me about the construction there, so I thought I’d give you a little blog update on the Hubbard Homestead Park. Yep, the city is building a park there, along with the median on 5th Ave NE they recently completed. There are also plans for a new sidewalk on 3rd Ave NE in the future. I keep saying North Seattle is getting nicer!
Seattle Parks and Recreation has named this site Hubbard Homestead Park. The name honors Harry Hubbard’s family, homesteaders who lived at the site from 1913 – 1968. The park and ride lot at 5th Ave NE and NE 112th Street (north of the Target store) was purchased from King County on April 1 for $9.5 million. The park and ride continued to function as a park and ride until June 1, 2009. The commuter parking spaces were relocated to Lorig Associates’ nearby Thornton Place development with no net loss of parking.

SDOT’s Sidewalk Development Program is making a significant pedestrian improvement on 1st Ave nue NE this year. This project was selected using Seattle’s recently-adopted Pedestrian Master Plan and will fill in two gaps that are currently missing along the existing sidewalk. Once completed, pedestrians will have a seamless facility to walk on that connects from NE 92 nd Street all the way to Northgate Mall.
The sidewalk project will be built along the east side of 1st Ave NE between the I-5 overpass (NE 92 nd Street) and Marie Callender’s Restaurant & Bakery at 9538 1st Ave NE. SDOT’s preliminary design includes a 6’ wide concrete sidewalk with a planting strip and 6”curb.
Construction is expected to begin in August. A program representative will be in contact with adjacent residents and property managers with more details about the project prior to beginning this work.
